Totem Rhythms, in conjunction with Darlington Art Center and Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, announce the creation of a community totem story pole to be permanently displayed on the grounds of Darlington Art Center.
A sharing session will be held April 17 and proposed stories to be carved into the pole will be accepted as the design of the totem story pole is created by Totem Rhythms members.
The dates for the creation of the totem story pole is slated for the week of May 31 through June 4, 2011 and will be held at Darlington Art Center located at 977 Shavertown Road Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania 19060.
The public is welcome and encouraged to participate in both the sharing session for the totem story pole's design as well as the actual creation of the pole which will involve carving and painting the stories into the pole. Wood carving or paintint experience is not required - there will be several professional wood carvers on-site to assist volunteers in carving the soft cedar wood the tree will be carved from.
For the younger children, there will be Native American story telling and children will be able to contribute to the project by painting their stories on paving stones that will ring the totem pole once it is installed in the ground on Saturday, June 4.
